Pre-camp (25 May, Monday)
  • What sounds interesting about this project?
A water tower helps to store water for human consumption. It plays a big part in many households. Therefore, I thought it would be interesting to create a prototype of it.
  • What do you think you can learn from this project?
I think I will be able to learn the issues important to the design of real civil engineering projects. I believe that I will also be able to learn the principles of building and construction trades, engineering, physics and static equilibrium.
    • Any immediate questions regarding the project?
What are the factors which affect the amount of load the prototype can support?
What are the techniques used to make a prototype of a water tower?

    First Day (26 May, Tuesday)
    • What did you do today?
We had made a prototype of a water tower today. We had to plan and come up with a design. Our structure prototype of a water tower managed to withstand 205 newtons.
    • What did you learn today?
I had learnt that teamwork is important because I believe that if not for teamwork our model would not have been presentable. Also, I had also learnt that planning is very crucial in making a prototype of a water tower.
    • How do you feel about today’s activities?
I feel today's activities were fun and engaging because it involved creativity. I have learnt that measurements and calculations are important because our water tower had exceeded the measurements.

    Second Day (27 May, Wednesday)

    • What did you do today?
We had to create a presentation on our structure prototype of our water tower today. We had also spent some time on listening to the other groups' presentations.
    • What did you learn today?
I learnt how to effectively present my ideas through presentations.I have also learnt how we could have improved our water tower by taking a look at the other groups' presentations such as meeting the height requirements and planning well before beginning to work on the actual model.
    • How do you feel about today’s activities?
I felt today's activities helped me to have a better enduring understanding of the other groups' prototypes of a water tower. I felt my group could have done a better job if we had planned more and had avoided doing the two 50kg tests.

    Third Day (27 May, Thursday)
    • Project Sharing Sessions
    - I have learnt more about the other projects
    - I have also learnt the different and unique ways to present my ideas well
    - I have learnt that the way you present your ideas is very important because there were two possible groups for presenting. One of the groups' water tower managed to withstand the most weight but had not presented their ideas as well. Therefore, they had lost the chance to present in front of the school.
    • How do you feel about the SST-NTU Flagship programme?
I feel that the SST-NTU flagship programme has helped me to learn the issues important to the design of real civil engineering projects. Overall, I felt the experience was a fun and engaging one. I would like to thank SST and NTU for giving us this opportunity :)
